What people ask first
If yours isn't here, write and ask. You can ask anything.
Do you take my insurance?
I take some commercial plans, such as PPO plans, and before your first session I'll tell you whether yours is one of them. I don't bill Medicare or Medicaid.
What is a superbill and how do I use it?
It's an itemized monthly receipt with the date and type of each session. It carries a diagnosis code, which your plan will see. You send it to your plan, and the plan decides whether to pay anything back.
What is a Good Faith Estimate?
If you pay without insurance, you have the right to a written estimate of your costs before you start. A bill $400 or more above it can be disputed. It isn't a contract, and I can send one before our first session.
How much does it cost, and how do fees work?
I set your fee by the length of the session and give it to you in writing before you start. The page on how fees work explains the rest.
Can I use an HSA or FSA card?
Yes. Both work as a card payment at the end of a session.
What happens in the first session?
We talk about how sessions work, what's private, and what you hope for. You don't have to say anything about the past, and nothing needs deciding that day.
How often and how long do sessions run?
A session is 50 minutes, and most people start weekly. We adjust as we go. I don't set a number of sessions.
Are you licensed where I live?
I'm licensed in Montana, and I can see you in the office or by video while you are in Montana. I can't see you by video from another state.
What do I do in a crisis?
Call or text 988, any time, or call 911 in an emergency. I can't answer messages around the clock, so please don't use this site for urgent needs.
What is confidential, and what are the limits?
What you tell me is private. The law sets limits, such as a serious risk of harm to you or someone else, or a report the law requires. I explain them in the first session, before you say anything you'd want to keep.
Do you see teens or children?
No. I see adults, 18 and older. I can suggest colleagues who see teens and children.
What is your cancellation policy?
Please give 24 hours' notice to change or cancel a session. After that, the session fee may apply, and I'll talk it through with you first.
Do I have to talk about what happened?
No. Many people never tell me the details. You decide what to say, and you can change your mind at any point.
